Reading Fairy Tale Lessons for Elementary School

It seems that no matter what age we are, we all love reading fairy tales. Even Albert Einstein said that if you want your kids to be smart, read them fairy tales. The same goes for fifth graders. Just because they are 10 and 11, it doesn’t mean they don’t want to hear all about fairy tales. I would venture to say that 5th graders love fairy tales even more than younger kids! Why is this?

Why do we love reading fairy tales?

There are a few reasons why fifth graders love reading fairy tales. First of all, they are usually at the perfect age to understand the moral lessons that these stories teach. They are also old enough to appreciate the beautiful language and imagery that is often used in fairy tales. And let’s not forget the fact that many of these stories are just plain old fun!

Lesson Plans for Fairy Tales

Start by looking at the skills and what needs to be taught. Often times I will scope out the lessons and build the lessons around the scope. Once I decide what I am going to teach, I build around the plans. I start off by creating a goal for the day. Then I create a connection. Why are connections important? It’s how we get the students to start thinking about the topic. You can generate thought provoking questions for the students to start thinking about the topic. In this case, it would be for 5th grade fairy tales.

My personal favorite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast. I love the story of Belle, a beautiful young woman, who is taken prisoner by a fearsome Beast. But as she gets to know him, she begins to see past his rough exterior and realizes that he is really a kind and gentle soul. In the end, they fall in love and live happily ever after. It’s a classic tale of finding beauty in unexpected places, and I never get tired of hearing it.

If you have a third, fourth, or fifth grader in your life, be sure to share some of your favorite fairy tales with them. Who knows, you might even inspire them to become the next Albert Einstein.
