Focus Skill: Building Background Knowledge
Why I Use It in September:
With Constitution Day landing in mid-September, this book is a perfect anchor text for helping students understand the foundation of the United States. But beyond the history lesson, it’s ideal for teaching the importance of background knowledge in reading comprehension.
This text helps students connect what they already know with what they’re learning. We explore the events surrounding the creation of the Constitution, and I model how prior knowledge helps us better understand new information.
Quick Teaching Idea:
Before reading, I create a KWL chart (Know–Want to Know–Learned) with the class. Students fill in what they already know about the Constitution, and we revisit it after reading to reflect on new learning.
🌸 2. Bloom – Before, During & After Reading Strategies
Focus Skill: Comprehension Monitoring (Before, During & After Reading)
Why I Use It in September:
Bloom is an empowering story about standing up, growing through struggle, and reclaiming your voice. It’s perfect for introducing before, during, and after reading strategies in a meaningful way.
This book is beautifully layered and ideal for practicing prediction, questioning, and reflection. I love how it encourages students to stay engaged throughout the reading process—and it naturally prompts thoughtful discussion.
Quick Teaching Idea:
Before reading, students make predictions based on the cover. During the story, we stop to ask questions. Afterward, we reflect on how the character changed and connect that to a personal “bloom” moment we’ve had.

Why I Use It in September:
The changing seasons make The Storm Book an ideal read for early fall. With its rich descriptive language and sensory details, this text is a go-to for teaching students how to visualize as they read.
We close our eyes and imagine the storm, using the author’s words as clues. Students draw what they picture in their minds, and we compare interpretations. It’s a powerful way to show how readers bring text to life through imagery.
Quick Teaching Idea:
Have students listen to a short section without seeing the pictures. Then they illustrate what they pictured. When you reveal the illustrations in the book, they’re always amazed by the differences—and the details they caught!
🐭 4. Chester’s Way – Drawing Conclusions

Why I Use It in September:
Chester’s Way is a sweet story about friendship, routine, and accepting differences. It’s full of subtle cues that make it great for practicing drawing conclusions—a skill that takes inference and pushes it further.
As we read, I guide students to notice the characters’ actions and how they reveal thoughts and feelings. They begin to understand that sometimes, the author doesn’t tell us everything—we have to read between the lines.
Quick Teaching Idea:
Create a “What I Read + What I Know = My Conclusion” chart. Students use this format to back up their thinking with both text evidence and their own reasoning.
