What are number talks?

Number talks are a daily routine to develop a deeper conceptual understanding and a comfortability with numbers, operations and mathematics. Number Talks help students see math as more than just memorization of facts and drill and kill worksheets.

What is included?

When can you use “Number Talks”?

1. Before your lesson or mini-lesson: Start your math class with a brief Number Talk to activate students’ prior knowledge and set the stage for the upcoming lesson.
2. Math Centers: Include Number Talks as one of the rotating activities in your math centers, allowing students to engage in meaningful discussions and problem-solving with their peers.
3. Homework: Assign Number Talks as part of students’ math homework to encourage independent thinking and reflection on mathematical concepts.
4. Morning Work: Kickstart the day with a quick Number Talk to get students mentally warmed up and focused on numbers and problem-solving.
5. Exit Tickets: Use Number Talks as a form of an exit ticket to assess students’ understanding of the day’s lesson and to promote reflection on their problem-solving strategies.
6. Quick Check: Incorporate a short Number Talk as a formative assessment tool to gauge students’ understanding of specific math concepts or skills.
7. Math Talks: Integrate Number Talks as a regular component of your math instruction, allowing students to explore different strategies, make connections, and deepen their number sense.
