Have you read the amazing book Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon? this bookwas one of the first picture books that I fell in love with as a teacher. I used this book CONSTANTLY throughout my teaching career. I had several copies and would even keep one in my library so my students could read it as well.
The Message of the Book
Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon has a great message in it. I love the theme and the message that is found in the book. The mesage is that you can love yourself and not worry about others thoughts. This message can be super powerful for your lesson and would definitely lend itself very nicely to your SEL lesson plans.
Additionally, the students have a great way to respond to their feelings and emotions. One way to do this is by using read and response in your reading notebooks. I love providing my students with a little slip and encourage them to reply to their feelings based on the book.
Writing about it
Let’s talk about that message found in this book again. We know that our students will relate to this lesson so what if we used those feelings to help our students write about how they feel? Incorporating your SEL lessons into your writing activity is an effective way to include your SEL and ELA lessons together.

Lesson planning
When I start planning my lessons for any picture book, the first thing that I need to do is figure out why the author may have written this book. I can analyze the book myself and determine the reason why they wrote the book or I can research it. This helps my students understand the book on a deeper level.
I will come up with all of the vocabulary words that we use throughout the week. Once we use these words, we will add them to our dictionary or vocab wall.
Comprehension Skills for Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon
With all the planning that I do, I will also create a list of all the questions that can be used before reading the book, during reading, and after reading. I also add 6 extension ideas for Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon. I want my students to be fully immersed with the book through the entire week and practicing multiple skills throughout the week that we read this book.
One great comprenshion task is to have your students describe the book. This can be used for almost any book. I use it for Molly Lou because it is a great read and the students really connect to it. By having that connection, you are helping the students understand the text on a deeper level. Think of it like this, if you have book that you don’t like or understand, are you going to be able to understand the text on a deeper level? Probably not.
